New for 2020 introduces our top predictions of the hottest new emerging live bands and musicians for those looking to find the best new acts to listen to and see live in 2020.

Uly is the moniker of Dublin-based astrophysics graduate-turned multi-instrumentalist Rafino M.J. Murphy.

Combining a love of old-school deep soul, jazz, funk, dusty production quality and topped with some pop sensibilities – Uly weaves together sonic threads to make music reminiscent of “a version of the ’70s that never happened”.

The project went public in May of 2018, but had been simmering below the surface during Rafino’s more formative years – while nurturing his creativity as a part of many local projects to suit all musical walks of life (MILESTONES, DAVIIS, OVER BEING UNDER & INNRSPACE).

Each a result of his own singular vision and craft – Uly’s releases have gone strength to strength, both in quality of writing and production – each receiving high local acclaim. While unintentionally being received as a fresh and unique addition to the local Irish independent music scene, Uly’s discography has a particular motif at the heart of it: it’s groovy, dusty and wants to get stuck in your head.

In a live setting, Uly takes on a different form altogether. Having assembled some of the finest musicians Dublin has to offer, he pulls his music from a lo-fi/bedroom pop sphere to that reserved for soul acts of a time gone by, with seemingly effortless ease and a collected level of cool.

At the end of March 2019, Uly signed a licencing deal with Irish label Faction Records (James Vincent McMorrow / All Tvvins / DAY_S, to name a few), debuting with his single ‘redlight’.
