New area announced at Electric Picnic
Picnickers to get an exclusive first listen of Cathy Davey’s new album..
If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big Picnic surprise.
Undeniably Ireland’s most eclectic Music & Arts Festival, Electric Picnic once again expands its horizons to include a programme of “otherworldly goings-on” in a newly discovered woodland haven!
This year the forest creatures will open their world of art and performance at the all new Hazel Wood area with a programme of mesmerising storytelling through interactive theatre, immersive hauntings, shadow puppetry, visual displays, commedia dell’arte workshops, visual art and much, much more!
The Hazel Wood will proudly play host to an Electric Picnic exclusive for Cathy Davey. Friday night from midnight you can catch Cathy perform her brand new album for the very first time in its entirety. Cathy commented ‘’Because this album was written in the forest I had fairly unrealistic notions of its first performance being in the woods. But Electric Picnic and Melvin have made it happen, I’m beyond excited. Maybe some of the creatures in the album will make an appearance!”
Let the band of merry men and women from Footsbarn Travelling Theatre spirit you away to the woods and enchant with their interactive and experimental theatre. If you go down to the woods today, you’d better go in disguise as Twisted Tales hosted by The Gaiety School of Acting will be hosting a series of workshops and performances. This theatrical forest foray will see characters in masquerade wandering straight off storybook pages and into the tree-lined paths of Electric Picnic.
Described as “An Hour of belly laughs” by The Irish Times is Late Night TV Talk Show by The Lords of Strut; Brothers Seamus and Sean host their own fantastical TV show which results in slapstick mayhem.
The irrepressible Mary Mary is Púca Puppet’s oldest performer. She is delighted to invite revellers at the Electric picnic, to take some time out and join her around the campfire for a tale or two.
Opera, art song, instrumental and chamber music are the ingredients used by The Melting Pot ensemble orchestrated by Siobhra Quinlan. Get crafty with mask making workshops by Behind the Mask, festive chic with the help of The Costume Mistress and contribute to a commemorative Picnic quilt with Lucy’s Lounge. The circus is coming to town, with the world’s oldest family circus Fossetts will be bringing their performance to Hazel Wood.
Irish artists Tessa Quinn, Sandra Daveron will be exhibiting their animalistic instillations in the heart of the woods.
When the sun sets the wood will serve as the setting for live Shadow Puppetry by Javanese Gamelan in conjunction with The National Concert Hall. The Cerebral Fortress urges you to be brave in the woods, close your eyes and tap into an immersive and augmented reality in your own psyche.
At this year’s Electric Picnic multi-media junkies, Generic People will host “AFTER DARK in The HAZEL WOOD” with incandescent visuals & lighting; a soul lifting selection of feel good live acts, musicians, DJs & performances. Some of the acts they have invited to join them include Live Acts such as Cathy Davey, Jack O’Rourke, Exit Pursued By a Bear, Carried By Waves, MKAI, DJs Jim X Comet with his David Bowie Tribute set, Fish Go Deep,Home Beat’s Emmet Condon on the wheels of steel. Also a special performance of the audio/visual/orchestral extravaganza WE LIVED IN CITIES a collaboration by B.K. Pepper, Madra Mor Production & Generic People…. keep an eye out for special guests to be announced.
As Electric Picnic draws to a close on Sunday evening, the costumed characters, woodland creatures and otherworldly beings from across the festival site will lead a procession across the whole festival site before they gather in The Hazel Woods for the wrap party to end all wrap parties, and dance the night away to the accelerating tones of Yurodny Ensemble.
