The Best Love Songs from Musicals
As Valentine's Day approaches and love is in the air, we take a look at some of the best love songs from the world of musicals.
A love song has the power to transport you back to a time and place and it can awaken emotions (both good and bad). The best love songs from musicals can give you a window into the soul of a character allowing you to understand their desire, motivations or even their inner turmoil.
Les Misérables – ‘On My Own’
Now we never said all the songs would be happy did we? ‘On My Own’ is a perfect example of an unrequited love song as Éponine shares her heartbreak that her beloved Marius will never return her affections.
Les Misérables comes to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 8 – 26 February 2022.
The Osmonds: A New Musical – ‘Love Me For A Reason’
Beloved by fans of the Osmonds, Boyzone and now musical theatre, ‘Love Me For A Reason’ is song from a person desperate to know the object of their desires is truly in love not lust.
The Osmonds: A New Musical takes to the stage of the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 22 – 26 March 2022.
Girl From The North Country – ‘Make You Feel My Love’
An undeniable classic from Bob Dylan, this ode to unconditional love of course features in ‘Girl From The North Country’, the depression era set show which uses Dylan’s discography.
Bonus fact, the song has been covered over 450 times!
‘Girl From The North Country’ comes to the 3Olympia Theatre for 5 weeks from 25 June – 30 July 2022.
The Cher Show – ‘I Got You Babe’
Is it possible not to sing along to ‘I Got You Babe’? We don’t think so. Young love never sounded so good.
The Cher Show has its Irish premiere at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 18 – 30 July 2022.
Waitress – ‘When He Sees Me’
A song about love from the cautious single girl’s perspective, a far too often ignored sub genre of love songs.
Get your orders in to see Waitress at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre 7 – 18 June 2022.
South Pacific – ‘Some Enchanted Evening’
One of the most popular songs to ever from from a Rodgers and Hammerstein show, this love at first sight tune was described by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber as the “Greatest song ever written for a musical.” High praise indeed.
South Pacific comes to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 13 – 17 September 2022.
Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical- ‘I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)’
Arguably the greatest power ballad of all time. There’s a lot of debate about what exactly he wouldn’t do for love so skip the next two sentences if you don’t want the mystery ruined.
In each verse he identifies what he would do for love, then follows with a promise of something he will not do. The ‘that’ is the promise in each verse.
Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical flies into the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre 30 August – 10 September 2022.
Jersey Boys – ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’
One of Frankie Valli’s most popular releases and of course featuring in Jersey Boys, this is a proclamation of adoration, yearning and passion.
Catch Jersey Boys with your Valentine in from 1 – 12 November 2022 at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre.
The Commitments – ‘Reach Out (I’ll Be There)’
Full of Motown classics, it’s hard to pick just one song from The Commitments but it’s hard to top ‘Reach Out (I’ll Be There)’. The track was inspired by the age old question of what do women want? The song was born when the writers agreed everyone just wants someone to be there for them through thick and thin.
Make sure you’ll be there at The Commitments in The 3Olympia Theatre from 7 – 19 February 2023 (so perfect for next year’s Valentine’s Day).
Singin’ In The Rain – ‘You Were Meant For Me’
It, of course, could only be ‘You Were Meant For Me’ from Singin’ In The Rain. A beautiful song about destiny and that person so perfect for you it could only be divine intervention.
Singin’ In The Rain makes a splash at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 31 May – 4 June 2022.
The Addams Family – ‘Tango De Amor’
Morticia and Gomez are one of the ultimate fictional couples, so of course the soundtrack to the dance of passion is the perfect soundtrack for their undeniable chemistry.
Be sure to pay your respects when The Addams Family comes to The Gaiety Theatre from 5 – 9 April 2022.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – ‘Beauty And The Beast’/’Gaston’
Now we’re going to cheat slightly with this one. Firstly, the title track, a classic about finding love where and when you least expect it and with who you least expect.
It was impossible to leave out ‘Gaston’ (because it’s an absolute tune). Again not a traditional love song, but a love song about both unrequited love from Le Fou towards Gaston as well as Gaston’s unmatchable love for himself. Take a page out of Gaston’s book and be your own number one love this Valentine’s Day.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast waltzes into Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 24 November – 17 December 2022.
