Few people have stayed relevant across as many decades, industries and cultural shifts as Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah started her career in local television when she was just a teenager and went on to become one of the most recognisable media figures in the world. Along the way, she changed daytime television, interviewed presidents and celebrities, built a successful business empire and funded major education and philanthropic projects around the world.

Ahead of her first ever appearance in the 3Arena, Dublin, here are five moments and achievements that highlight how Oprah continues to inspire people globally.

1. Oprah’s Authenticity Turned a Talk Show Into a Global Brand

The Oprah Winfrey Show ran for 25 years and became the highest rated talk show in American television history. At its peak, the show reached millions of viewers daily and was broadcast internationally across more than 100 countries. What made Oprah different at the time was the style and approach of her show. Interviews were longer, more personal and often focused on real life experiences rather than celebrity promotion.

Beyond her talk show, Oprah built Harpo Productions, producing award-winning films and television shows, launched O, The Oprah Magazine, created the cable network OWN, acted in feature films, wrote several books and launched a podcast to continue in-depth conversations about the topics that matter most in this moment.

Oprah’s ability to remain authentic and believe in herself helped shape her business decisions as she became one of the world’s wealthiest self-made women in media.

2. Oprah’s Approach to Interviewing the Most Famous People in the World

Over the years, Oprah has interviewed an enormous range of public figures including Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Tom Cruise, Whitney Houston, Lance Armstrong, Tina Turner and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Many of those interviews became major cultural moments around the world because of the way Oprah connects with her guests and asks the questions her audience is thinking. Oprah’s interview style has been a model for how many interviews today are conducted, commonly seen across podcasts, documentaries and long form media interviews.

3. Investing Heavily in Education and Philanthropy

Oprah has donated extensively to education and charitable causes throughout her life. One of her best-known projects is the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which opened in 2007 and will celebrate 20 years of supporting the education of young women.

Oprah has also created and funded hundreds of scholarships, literacy programmes, disaster relief efforts and housing projects over the years. Through Oprah’s Angel Network, millions of dollars were raised for charitable initiatives globally. While her media career is what made her famous, philanthropy has remained a consistent and important part of her life.

4. Bringing Conversations Around Self Development Into Mainstream Culture

Long before podcasts and social media made self improvement content mainstream, Oprah was already building large audiences around conversations about wellbeing, mindset, resilience and personal growth. Through her show, book club and interviews, she introduced audiences to authors, psychologists, health experts and motivational speakers that later became globally recognised.

Many of the topics now common in leadership and wellbeing conversations were regularly discussed on her platforms years earlier. Her influence in this area is part of the reason she still appeals to audiences far outside entertainment.

5. Remaining Relevant Across Four Different Decades

Very few public figures stay influential across multiple generations. Oprah has managed to remain culturally relevant from the 1980s through to today across television, publishing, streaming, business and digital media.

Part of that is down to adaptability. Her career has moved with changing media trends while still keeping a recognisable style and voice. She is also one of the few interviewers or speakers whose appearances still generate major public attention regardless of the format. That is a large part of why her appearance in Ireland is attracting so much interest.

For many people, Oprah represents different things depending on the generation they grew up in. For some, she is the defining television interviewer of the 1990s, while for others, she is a business success story. She is associated with philanthropy, leadership and personal development for others. Whatever the reason, very few people have had the same level of impact across media and culture for as long as she has.
