Electric Picnic 2016…The Final Countdown

With just 24 hours to go, over 2,000 performers, multiple stages and countless laughs to be had, we’ve put together our list of things not to be missed this weekend:

1.    The Hazel Wood
A newly discovered woodland haven in the ancient Stradbally forest with a programme of mesmerising storytelling through interactive theatre, immersive hauntings, shadow puppetry, visual displays, commedia dell’arte workshops, visual art and much, much more! Songstress Cathy Davey will give an exclusive performance of her album on Friday night at midnight. Get there early to be sure to get a space for the very special, intimate performance.

2.    Fr. Ted Special
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of ‘My Lovely Horse’, Trailer Park & My Lovely Ranch are throwing a full day celebration kicking things off with Father Alan’s Alternative Sunday Mass at 1.30pm. There’ll be a table quiz, the Lovely Girls Competition which includes ‘The Lovely Walk’, ‘The Lovely Laugh’ and ‘The Lovely Sandwich’ along with the final of ‘A Rubbish Song for Europe’ and then a Eurovision Disco to top it all off! There’ll be some familiar faces there too with Fr. Damo, Neill Hannon and Ms. Doyle being among some of them!

3.    Jenny Greene & The RTÉ Concert Orchestra
Live in the Rankins Wood tent from 9pm on Friday night 2FM are combining the dance music force that is Jenny Greene and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra to bring Picnickers club classics like they’ve never heard before!

4.    Twenty-One Sixteen Parliament Hosted by Blindboy Boatclub
The Twenty-One Sixteen Parliament chaired by Ceann Comhairle Blindboy Boatclub of the Rubberbandits, with speakers including Prof Luke O’Neill of TCD, Dr. Rhona Mahony, Master of the National Maternity Hospital and Rosaleen McDonagh, a playwright from the Traveller community. It’s in the Leviathan tent in Mindfield from 4.50pm-5.50pm on Saturday.

5.    The Lake
The ancestral lake behind Stradbally Hall is now open to Picnickers for swimming for the first time ever. It’s open until 7pm be sure to pack the swimming togs. Please see electricpicnic.ie for opening times for families & adults.

6.    Anachronica
Hidden and lurking amongst the shadows the broken and somewhat dilapidated buildings of the long abandoned city that is Anachronica, were found looming through the tress. Whatever its purposes this area of forgotten land seems to have a hypnotic effect on people and will be sure to draw revellers from near and far to keep them dancing into the small hours at this power generating machine.

7.    Other Voices
In the heart of Stradbally Estate’s woodland area, Other Voices returns with an eclectic line-up. As the saying goes, expect the unexpected – magical performances from old friends and new, songs and tunes for the head and the heart! With Booka Brass kicking off proceedings from 4pm on Friday afternoon, they are sure to get the party started!

8.    What it’s all about…
We all know who the headliners are but here’s a few acts you *might not have heard of that will definitely be worth catching over the course of the weekend;

•         Search Party Animals – 5pm, the Earthship Stage in Body & Soul
•         Fields – 10pm Saturday on the Oxjam stage
•         Rocstrong – 6.30pm Saturday on the Earthship Stage in Body & Soul
•         All Tvvins – 2.30am Friday night Body & Soul

Tickets:
The Picnic is SOLD OUT so if you don’t have a ticket please do not turn up as no more tickets will go on sale. Organisers have advised against buying tickets from websites or unknown sources. If you buy tickets from an unauthorized dealer, website or classified ad you run a high risk of losing your money and not getting in to the festival. We have already had reports of fake tickets being sold.

Garda Advice:
Gardaí advise to turn off sat-navs and follow the clearly sign posted routes from AA roadwatch to avoid unnecessary delay and traffic disruption. Key junctions and points will be manned by Gardaí. Designated privately operated car parking is provided adjacent to the event site on all approved routes. This parking is free to all ticket holders and no roadside parking will be permitted.

Inspector Declan Dunne from Portlaoise Garda Station said ‘Pack sensibly for the weekend, check the weather forecast before you leave. Be safe! Give yourself plenty of time to get to the venue. Leave high value goods at home and put car keys and important valuables in a safe, secure place. When you are in groups, make sure everyone is accounted for. Look after each other’s personal safety and most importantly enjoy the weekend!’
